Giving the Gift of Health By Erin Whyte, RMT

As the calendar makes the final flip of the year, it is suddenly December and we can almost surely be heard to say “Where did the year go?” or “It’s only 3 weeks ‘til Christmas!”. Christmas should be a time for sharing, giving, spending time with friends and family, relaxing and being thankful for all the beauty and wonderment that surrounds us. And yet we (myself included) often times find ourselves fretting over the perfect gift, the appropriate amount that both fits within our budget yet also says “I love you”. We lose weekends and evenings to over-crowded malls, sending cards, attending Christmas parties, baking and travel plans! As we get pulled in so many directions we become increasingly weary and frayed, we seem to lose our sense of the Christmas spirit during the weeks leading up to it and in-so doing we lose the value of what it means to give. Consider giving the gift of health; to someone who perhaps doesn't take that time out for themselves when they so desperately need it; to someone who gives more of themselves to other people than they give to themselves; to someone who doesn't have the opportunity to experience touch in their lives due to illness or other circumstances; to someone who feels that massage is a luxury rather than a means to well-being and overall health. That someone could be a friend or family member…or perhaps it could be you. Touch is an integral part of our lives. This is my first newsletter with the Network Healing Centre and you can be sure that you will read that line time and time again as I feel it to be so important. We cannot survive without it...if we do it is likely without compassion, empathy or love. Anything from a hug to a hand squeeze to a simply being close to someone on the bus can constitute touch. As humans we desire it and it fills us with love and sense of connectedness to other people. It can also very powerfully reconnect us to our own bodies. In the day to day rush of our lives (taxiing children around from one activity to another, dealing with aging parents, attending fitness classes, making dinner, 8 hours of work behind a computer, phone calls, social commitments, doctors appointments, etc, etc.) we soon desensitize ourselves from what we are feeling. Our aches and pains become part of our lives; we "live with it". With everything else bombarding our senses, one more small stressor added on isn't even felt or registered by our brain. Or perhaps it becomes the straw to break the camels back. Either way both the emotional stressor and physical stressor become embedded in our bodies. Many people consider massage a luxury, something they couldn’t possibly spend money on for themselves. Why not? You invest in the upkeep of your teeth on a regular basis; your car gets a tune-up once maybe twice a year. You maintain so many other aspects of your life so why wouldn’t you consider the vessel that makes it all happen for you? Invest in yourself, connect with yourself. Massage is a therapeutic and highly rewarding therapy that could surprise you in conditions that it treats and the benefits that you receive from it. It’s more than merely “relaxing”, it can improve sleep, boost energy and immune system functioning deal with old injuries and prevent new ones. If you or someone you know could benefit from a gift of health then consider giving a gift certificate to that individual and receive the thanks of a meaningful gift. A gift full of comfort, compassion and caring from the giver to the receiver!

Angela’s Goodbye

I just wanted to take this opportunity to say “Goodbye” to all the wonderful people I have met while practicing at The Network healing Centre. It was a hard decision to leave but practicing close to home has several advantages. I hope you all have a happy, healthy holiday season and a wonderful new year.

All the best, Angela Soberal, RMT

We are pleased to welcome Marie-José Ward as your new Office Manager!

Tips for Eating Healthy This Winter

As winter rolls around it doesn’t mean you should drop your healthy summer eating habits with the dropping of the temperatures. You still need five servings a day of vegetables and fruits. Try to include vegetables and fruits in every meal. Being as your options are limited during the winter months, now is the time to try new recipes as well as sampling products you have never tried before. Winter brings crops of root vegetables like squash, parsnips, rutabagas, turnips, brussels sprouts and more. Apples and pumpkins are great comforting desserts. The key to buying the best produce is to know what you’re looking for. All year round look for vegetables and fruits with good colour; stay away from bruised and blemished produce that has soft spots or shriveling.

The Gift of Giving

One of the best gifts we can give to our loved ones and ourselves is the promotion of good health. There are countless benefits of good health: we sleep, work, serve, think and feel better. There is much sadness in the world, but there are also unlimited ways to make a positive difference. You can gain tremendous benefits from giving. Among these benefits are new friends, a feeling of security, better health, happiness, and a sense of pride. You are at your best when you make a difference and contribute. Passion for a worthwhile cause helps you tap into your own creativity. You only need so much as an individual to be happy. Therefore, to live to your potential and create abundance, you need to do something larger than yourself, thus the need to give. You are conduit – the more you allow giving flow through you, the more abundance flows back into your life. The more you give, the more you receive. Giving is a beautiful experience. One of the best gifts you can give people is your respect, displayed through active listening. The Chinese philosophy is to listen with the eyes, ears, heart, listen with undivided attention.

Healing Words

Lately I have been inspired by the poems of Dorothy S. Hunt in her book “Only This!” Hope you enjoy this poem “Healing is Being” What is healing is not working on yourself; What is healing is being yourself. Thinking fear should be gone brings more fear; Thinking anger should be gone brings more anger. Without a gatekeeper, the world chirps and buzzes, laughs and weeps, and lives in peace. Rain lasts for a morning, or a season, and is gone. The sun is always present in the highest heaven, yet clouds are not unwelcome. The tiny white flower in the never-seen thicket blooms as itself without regret, and the deer are not ashamed by their need to run from harm’s way. What healing is not working on yourself; What is healing is simply being yourself. Effort is the Two. Judgment is the Two. Truth appears in the moment of its unfolding and is never of the mind. What Is, is always Now. Laugh or weep when it is time; Be big or small as the moment appears; Inhale when you inhale; Exhale when you exhale; Nature’s rhythms are never wrong. Trust the wisdom of Being itself living its life as you.
