Massage Therapy
By Angela Soberal

What is Massage Therapy?
Massage is one of the oldest, simplest forms of therapy- a system of manual manipulation involving stroking, pressing and kneading different areas of the body to relieve pain, relax, stimulate, and tone the body.

What can Massage Therapy do for me?
Although a single massage will be enjoyable as well as beneficial, the effects of massage are cumulative and a series of treatments will bring about the most benefits. Regular massage can have the effect of strengthening and toning the entire body mechanism, and so help to prevent unnecessary strains and injuries that might otherwise occur due to excess tension and any structural weaknesses. At its best, massage has the potential to restore the individual physically, mentally and spiritually.

Massage Therapy performed on a healthy person increases muscle flexibility and relaxation, and decreases stress levels. The most profound changes from massage seem to occur in the body in areas that were experiencing pathology or trauma. Psychological benefits are also most evident in those experiencing stress and depression.

What Can I Expect When I Go For A Massage Appointment?
On your first visit you will complete a confidential health history form which your therapist will go over with you to determine your goals. After this information is obtained, your therapist will take you through a series of tests to more specifically determine your treatment needs. After your treatment, remedial exercises for you to perform between treatments will be given, when appropriate.

Must I undress for my massage?
Massage therapists are required to cover/ drape you with a sheet so that they expose only the area which they are working on. You may need to undress for your treatment.  However, you do not need to expose yourself in any way that causes you discomfort.

Am I expected to talk during my massage?
If you wish to have silence, you should mention this at the beginning of your treatment. The therapist may, however, require some verbal information pertinent to health findings during the treatment.

NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE
Tension Headaches Cut in Half with Acupuncture

By: Dr. Leesa Kirchner, N.D.

A study in the British Medical Journal showed that acupuncture is an effective technique for treating tension headaches.  What’s more, “minimal” acupuncture techniques – needles inserted superficially into the skin at nontraditional points – work almost as well as the full, traditional version used in China.

Eight-Week Trial
Researchers in Germany divided 270 patients with similar symptoms into three groups for a randomized, controlled trial.  Over an eight-week period, one group was treated with full traditional acupuncture, one with minimal acupuncture, and one with neither method.

Headache Rates Cut in Half
Headache rates dropped by almost half among those in the “traditional acupuncture” group.  On average, the experienced 7 fewer days of headaches in the four weeks following the trail than they did in the four weeks preceding it.

Those in the “minimal acupuncture group” fared almost as well, with an average drop of 6.6 days with the headaches.  The third group only saw an average drop of 1.5 days – just a tenth less than what they had experienced prior to the study.

The researchers concluded that acupuncture works as well or better for tension headaches than conventional treatments.

Letting Go
By Dr. Michael Tucker, D.C.

The founder of chiropractic, a Canadian by birth, D.D. Palmer held a vision for Chiropractic from 1895 until his death.  During his later years, his son B.J. Palmer was extremely influential in growing the profession.

I would like to share a few paragraphs from the hundreds of books and articles written by B.J. Palmer.

I know these few paragraphs are very right brain (not scientific) but they help me remember the big picture.

Subtle Substance of Soul

We chiropractors work with the subtle substance of the soul.  We release the imprisoned impulse, the tiny rivulets of force, that eminates from the mind and flows over the nerves to cells and stirs them into life.  We deal with majestic power that transforms common food into living, loving, thinking clay; that robes the earth with beauty and hues and scents the flowers with the glory of air.

In the dim, dark, distant long-ago, when the sun first bowed to the morning star, this power spoke and there was life; it quickened the slime of the sea and dust of the earth and drove the cell to union with its fellows and countless living forms.  Through eons of time, it finned the fish and winged the bird and fanged the beast.  Endlessly, it worked, evolving its forms until it produced the crowning glory of them all.  With tireless energy, it blows the bubble of each individual life and then, silently, relentlessly dissolves the form and absorbs the spirit into itself again.

And yet, you ask, “Can chiropractors cure appendicitis or the flu?”  Have you more faith in a spoonful of medicine than in the power that animates the living world?
