Our bodies were designed to sweat. Sweat is our body’s way to help balance temperature, and is our natural way to effectively eliminate toxic waste products that build up in the body. Skin is the body’s largest detoxification organ and by sweating we can lessen our toxic load.
Increasing the body’s temperature as a means to improve health and treat disease has been used by many cultures around the world throughout history. Saunas have been around in Europe, especially Northern Europe, for hundreds of years. In North America, some of the earliest inhabitants developed and passed down the tradition of “sweat lodges” for health and spiritual benefits.
Research has been conducted on a particular type of sauna called Far-Infrared Sauna. This type of sauna became popular in Japan over the past century. Far-Infrared saunas are a bit different than the traditional steam or dry versions. Far-Infrared waves warm objects while keeping the air a cooler temperature. The heat is pleasantly warm and dry as opposed to the high heat and humidity of traditional saunas which can be hard to tolerate. Infrared radiation is what we often describe as “the healing warmth of the sun”, or radiant heat.
Infrared radiation is measured as light along the electromagnetic spectrum. It falls just below (“infra”) the red light segment and is not visible to the eye. Far-Infrared waves are thermal. In other words, we experience this type of infrared radiation everyday in the form of heat! The heat we feel from sunlight, a fire, a radiator or a warm sidewalk is infrared. [Nasa]
Far Infrared radiation (FIR) penetrates the skin an estimated 3-4 centimeters, working energetically at the cellular level to increase metabolism and blood circulation, as well as elevating the core body temperature – which promote healing of injuries and detoxification of the body.
The detoxification potential of FIR is up to three times greater than with a conventional sauna. The sweat to temperature ratio of the FIR produces 3X the sweat at a more comfortable level (40-60C) than conventional steam saunas (90-115C). The actual water in the sweat when using the FIR sauna is 80-85% of the volume contrasted by a much higher 95-97%, in the conventional sauna.
The remaining 15-20% contains toxic residues such as lead, cadmium, nickel, copper, sodium, aluminum, benzene, chloride, fluoride, etc. These substances are stocked up in our body in the kidneys and under the skin as cellulites. The tremendous use of calorie burning (300-600 cal per session) improves the destruction of fat tissue which typically has the highest level of toxicity in the body. When water is drawn out of the body, the fat is released too.
